Keep Asking Why

WHY is such an important question! Although it can come across as accusatory (“WHY did you do THAT?”), it can actually be a very powerful question to help us interrogate motivation or cause. There is another maxim which says that honestly and positively asking WHY repeatedly until you can’t come up with anything else is the best way to get to the real root of things.

I bring this up as this question was asked of me by a friend recently about my work: “Yes, I know WHAT you do, but WHY do you do it?” I’m still thinking about it, but as I do, it has made me consider the types of responses ANYONE might have to this question…
– Someone has to do it
– I’m good at it
– It needs to be done
– I get paid to do it
– I love it
– I can’t imagine doing anything else
– I feel God has told me to do it
– I am trained/experienced to do it
– There is no one else
– It is a step toward something further
– I committed to doing it

None of these are right or wrong. And, I would guess that most of the time, you might respond with several of these. What other WHY’s do you have for what you do?

I’m asking myself this question and maybe it would help you (as an individual, team, or organisation) to ask the same on a regular basis. It keeps us from just doing things “because that’s what we do” and re-motivates us. Often, it helps to have another person ask it of us so we have to think about it again.

Keep thinking and doing!

Why I like to shower with Taylor Swift (and you may want to as well!)

Maybe you are like me and try to take reasonably short showers because it’s good for our world (my goal is 4 minutes).

Or maybe you are like me and NEED to take short showers because you are always running just a little late and need to hurry.

Something I have found helpful and wanted to put out there as a possible good solution for all of us is showering with Taylor Swift. Yes, that Taylor Swift. Stay with me, this makes sense…

Perhaps in your attempts to take quick showers, you have used a timer of some sort. Did it work?

Because you don’t know when the timer is going to run out. So there you are washing the shampoo out of your hair and eyes, and time’s up. And you’re not done, of course, so you spend the next minute on your final rinse but you have now gone over time – again. So your timer has done you no good except alert you to the fact that you are indeed taking too long of a shower.

But what if you had a “timer” that you could tell how far along in the time you are? What if you had a timer with some clear indicators that you need to wrap it up BEFORE you want to be done? What if you had a timer that you enjoyed listening to?

Here’s the Taylor Swift part.

ok, I guess you could take a shower WITH Taylor Swift and she could keep an eye on the time for you, and give you some sort of countdown. But let’s be honest, Tay Tay is not going to do that for most of us. But I’ve got something better.

Her songs. Yes, her wonderful songs. Listen to them in the shower. Why?

  1. they are amazing.
  2. you can tell how far along the song is, and therefore pace yourself
  3. they are shower length!

Here are the times of some of my favourite T-Swizzle tunes:

  • 22 – 4:04
  • Back to December – 5:05 (for those extra-long shower mornings)
  • Begin Again – 4:11
  • Blank Space – 4:33
  • Everything Has Changed – 4:13
  • I Knew You Were Trouble – 3:53
  • Mean – 4:04
  • Mine – 3:56
  • Red – 4:02
  • Shake it Off – 4:02
  • Style – 4:03
  • The Last Time – 3:48
  • We are Never Ever Getting Back Together – 3:36 (wash fast or skip doing your hair this time)
  • Wildest Dreams – 3:55
  • You Belong with Me – 3:49

Of course, yes, you could use any sort of music that is the length you desire. I will let you figure that out yourself. But really, I think I’ve made a pretty strong case for taking a shower with Taylor Swift. It just makes sense.

“Wildest Dreams” – 3:55
